Maldives girl to get 100 lashes for pre-marital sex

By Olivia Lang BBC News

Rights groups have urged the government to abolish the punishment

A 15-year-old rape victim has been sentenced to 100 lashes for engaging in premarital sex, court officials said.

The charges against the girl were brought against her last year after police investigated accusations that her stepfather had raped her and killed their baby. He is still to face trial.

Amnesty International condemned the punishment as “cruel, degrading and inhumane“.

….

Zaima Nasheed, a spokesperson for the juvenile court, said the girl was also ordered to remain under house arrest at a children’s home for eight months.

She defended the punishment, saying the girl had willingly committed an act outside of the law.

Officials said she would receive the punishment when she turns 18, unless she requested it earlier.

The case was sent for prosecution after police were called to investigate a dead baby buried on the island of Feydhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, in the north of the country.

Her stepfather was accused of raping her and impregnating her before killing the baby. The girl’s mother also faces charges for failing to report the abuse to the authorities.

The legal system of the Maldives, an Islamic archipelago with a population of some 400,000, has elements of Islamic law (Sharia) as well as English common law.

Ahmed Faiz, a researcher with Amnesty International, said flogging was “cruel, degrading and inhumane” and urged the authorities to abolish it.

“We are very surprised that the government is not doing anything to stop this punishment – to remove it altogether from the statute books.”

“This is not the only case. It is happening frequently – only last month there was another girl who was sexually abused and sentenced to lashes.”

He said he did not know when the punishment was last carried out as people were not willing to discuss it openly.” more

I think honest people should boycott countries which have laws like this. Other governments must put pressures on countries like that to abolish injustice and cruelty.

First, two news items:

1. "Three-year-old girl joins Mensa with an IQ ‘higher than
Stephen Hawking’ to become just one of 18 pre-school members
  • Alice Amos, from Guildford, Surrey, scored 162 in the Stanford Binet test
  • The toddler is already bilingual, speaking both English and Russian
  • Her IQ matches some of the world's most notable intellectuals both past and present"

So much of human potential is lost because of this.
2. "Sharia Law Swallowing Indonesia

Indonesia, once a country of diversity, is now becoming
a place for one-way Islam.
Although Indonesia, "the world largest Muslim country"
with an 87% Muslim population, was once considered a
moderate Muslim country, day by day it has been leaning
more and more towards conservative Islam and Sharia
laws. Initiated in 2009, bylaws in the light
of Sharia rulings were implemented that conflict
with the values of human rights, and are
creating a difficult land for minorities to live in.
Indonesian Aceh province authorities recently launched an
initiative, despite opposition from human rights activists,
to ban women from straddling motorcycle when riding behind
a man. Suaidi Yahia, mayor of Lhokseumawe, the second large
city of the province, said to the Associated Press, "It is
improper for women to sit astride. We implement Islamic
law here." He later said, "women sitting on motorbikes must
not sit astride: it will provoke the male drivers." Instead,
they allow women to sit sidesaddle, which is dangerous
on a motorcycle."

Then a few maps:

Muslim Gangs Enforce Sharia Law in London :: Gatestone Institute

In религия, religion on February 1, 2013 at 09:55

http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/3555/sharia-law-london An absolute pure horror. Please tell me it’s not true…

“Muslim gangs have been filmed loitering on streets in London and demanding that passersby conform to Islamic Sharia law.

The self-proclaimed vigilantes, who call themselves Muslim London Patrol, are seen in several videos abusing people for drinking alcohol, for showing too much flesh and for being homosexual.

In one three-and-a-half minute video posted on YouTube on January 17, a number of hooded men are seen repeatedly shouting “this is a Muslim area” towards non-Muslim passers-by.

In the footage, which was shot at night on the weekend of January 12/13 on a mobile phone, in what is believed to be Whitechapel in east London, one gang member is seen telling a young woman who is wearing a short skirt, “you cannot dress like that in a Muslim area, this is a Muslim area.”

A few moments later, the vigilantes confront a man carrying a can of beer, telling him “no alcohol is allowed.” They then force him to empty out the contents of the can on the sidewalk. One gang member shouts: “Get him to pour it out, pour it out, Muslim area. Alcohol bad. This is a Muslim area. This area is a Muslim area. No drink in this area.” He continues: “What this is, is a Muslim Patrol. We are Muslims and we patrol the area. Forbidden … evil. Alcohol is evil. No alcohol. Yes? Have a good day.”

A few moments later, the vigilantes accost a woman who, referring to the imposition of Sharia law in the neighborhood exclaims, “I cannot believe it!” The Muslims respond: “We do not care if you believe it or not.”

At another point, one gang member admonishes another gang member not to allow non-Muslims to pass along the sidewalk in front of a mosque. He shouts: “You need to control this area and forbid these people from dressing like this and exposing themselves outside the mosque.” A few moments later, a gang member accosts two non-Muslims who are passing by. “Remove yourself away from the mosque. Go away now. This is a Muslim area. Muslim patrol. Muslim patrol. Move away from the mosque.”

Another Muslim then shouts: “This is democracy, this is freedom, this is secularism, move away from the mosque. We clearly need Islam. Go away and don’t come back. Don’t come back. Keep your mouth closed.”

Next the men then accost a woman passerby. “We do not respect dolls who disobey God, we don’t respect them.” The woman, stunned, responds, “I am so appalled.” The men reply: “We don’t care if you are appalled at all.” She says: “This is Great Britain.” The men reply: “This is not-so-Great Britain, this is a Muslim area. We are vigilantes implementing Islam upon your own necks.”

In another video, Muslims are seen harassing a man they perceive to be a homosexual. They aggressively pursue the man and shout at him, “Hello mate, don’t you know this is a Muslim area. Why are you dressed like that for.” The man responds: “Why are you bothering me.” The Muslims respond: “You are walking in a Muslim area dressed like a fag, mate. You need to get out of here.” Clearly terrified, the man responds, “I am getting out of here.” The Muslims respond, “Get out of here quicker then. You’re dirty mate. Admit you’re dirty. You’re gay, mate. Get out of here, you bloody fag.”

The vigilante video follows another clip in which Muslim vigilantes protest against advertisements for push-up bras by High Street retailer H&M. In the three minute video they say: “The Muslims have taken it upon themselves to command the good and forbid the evil and cover up these naked people.” They then show a number of advertisements for the product which have been sprayed over and also film themselves pouring petrol over one advertisement and setting it on fire.

In a fourth video, uploaded onto YouTube on January 23, one day after two gang members were arrested by London police, members of Muslim London Patrol are defiant. As the video opens, men are heard shouting, “Allah is the greatest! Islam is here, whether you like it or not. We are here! We are here!” What we need is Islam! What we need is Sharia!”

The video continues: “We are the Muslim Patrol. We are in north London, we are in south London, in east London and west London. We command good and forbid evil. Islam is here in London. [Prime Minister] David Cameron, Mr. Police Officer, whether you like it or not, we will command good and forbid evil. You will never get us. You can go to hell! This is not a Christian country. To hell with Christianity. Isa [Jesus] was a messenger of Allah. Muslim Patrol will never die. Allah is great! Allah is great! We are coming!”

In a January 23 interview with the online newspaper International Business Times, Anjem Choudary, a radical preacher who has long called for Sharia law to be implemented in Britain and other European countries, defended the gang, saying Muslims are simply trying to rid London of prostitution and drunkenness.

According to Choudary, “The practice of Muslims going out and forbidding evil is not new. There is a prevalence of prostitution and drunkenness in London and the police are not dealing with it. The problem is so widespread that I’m not surprised more Muslims are not taking it into their hands. The area [Whitechapel] is a Muslim area so for them to say these things are not allowed is correct. They should be commended for their actions.”

He added: “This is a wake-up call for society to ask ‘where are we headed?’ There is a clash between Islam and liberal democracy in hotspots areas of London.”

Choudary has previously led a campaign, known as the Islamic Emirates Project, to turn twelve British cities — including what he calls “Londonistan” — into independent Islamic states. The so-called Islamic Emirates would function as autonomous enclaves, ruled by Islamic Sharia law, and operated entirely outside British jurisprudence.

Taliban mentality or Sharia for a brain

In Uncategorized on April 5, 2012 at 07:21

And would you allow women to work in offices? Sharia does not allow that. We should leave this until we conquer some offices, and if there is need for work, we will gather the ulema to decide based on Sharia. That if a woman works, under what conditions should she work? Only if it is permitted under Sharia orders. If not, then working with a stranger, with a foreigner -even the voice of a woman is banned on a strange man. Allah says in his book that the man should lower his gaze and so should the woman -if looking is not permitted, talking is not permitted, then how can they work? Here, we want a Sharia system. Whatever is allowed in Sharia, we will not disobey. We do not want a western or democracy system. What about the parliament? Would you permit them to be MPs? The way it is now, this parliament -we reject this entirely. This does not exist in the Sharia, this is a western system, a democracy system. Their going to this parliament and joining this kind of a parliament in itself could be a reason for jihad -that our women are this free now. Listen to BBC, how they speak. Hearing a woman’s voice is banned on others. They speak on the radio, in the parliament, on TV -while not being covered -and the whole world hears their voice. I want to say this briefly: if Sharia does not allow it…

Taliban mentality or Sharia for a brain

In Uncategorized on September 1, 2011 at 10:36

On Friday a car bomb exploded at the United Nations compound, in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, killing at least 18 people and injuring several others. It is the latest, and most ambitious in a series of bomb explosions that have hit the city in the last year.

The last one, in June, targeted the police headquarters in Abuja, killing two people.

Boko Haram, an Islamic extremist group (sometimes referred to as “the Nigerian Taliban”) has been claiming responsibility for these bombings. “Boko Haram” translates loosely as “Western education is forbidden/sinful.”

The group holds all government authority in contempt and wants to establish a Sharia state in Northern Nigeria. Boko Haram has been in existence for several years, proselytising, and running a mosque and religious school, but did not rise to national prominence until it attacked police stations and prisons in parts of Northern Nigeria in July, 2009.

In retaliation, Nigerian security forces launched a ruthless crackdown. Hundreds of people were killed; the Boko Haram camp destroyed, and its leader, Mohammed Yusuf, arrested. He would later die in police custody, and a number of officers are currently facing trial. (Some of the group’s anger is traceable to what it claims is the highhandedness of the Nigerian police and military).

The violence perpetrated by Boko Haram is typically cast by the international media as evidence of tensions between Nigeria’s “predominantly Christian South” and its “predominantly Muslim North.” There have also been suggestions that the Muslim North is unhappy that a Southern Christian is president, at a time when, according to the terms of an informal North-South power-rotating pact in the ruling party, a Northerner ought to be president; and that Boko Haram’s activities are a manifestation of that unhappiness.

At best this is an oversimplification of issues, and at worst dangerously misleading. The Boko Haram violence cannot sensibly be narrowed into a North versus South crisis. When it flared up in 2009, the late Umar Yar’Adua, a Northern Muslim, was president. A similar crisis erupted in Kano State, involving a sect known as ‘Maitatsine’ (“one who curses,”) in December 1980, when Shehu Shagari, also a Northern Muslim, was in power.

Religion certainly plays a huge role in the crisis, as it does in everyday Nigerian life. But reducing extremist Islamic sects to “anti-Christian” movements hardly aids a better understanding of the issue.

In their choice of enemies and targets, extremist Islamic sects will generally not discriminate between non-Muslims and moderate Muslims (the category to which one may safely say the majority of Nigeria’s Muslims belong.) Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the assassinations of a number of influential Muslim politicians in Northern Nigeria. At least two Northern Muslim Governors have, under threat of attack, apologized to the group.

The role of social factors — poverty and illiteracy — cannot also be ignored. There are millions of economically-deprived youth in Northern Nigeria for whom the only education available, and encouraged, is an itinerant Islamic one. They are a ready army for purveyors of radical teachings.
